Abstract
Measuring and subsequent abating tyre/road noise in density populated areas in Hong Kong is an acute problem. A CPX trailer was fabricated by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2007. The trailer successfully passed all the specified certification tests and was used to measure the tyre/road noise in the past two years. The trailer however still has some limitations; the most critical one being single test wheel which can only travel in the middle of the lane, not on the wheel track. A CPX vehicle with two test wheels is being developed. This CPX vehicle has many special features including auto lifting devices for "wheel lifting" certification test, an additional acoustic cover to reduce the influence of bearing noise, pavement temperature and tyre pressure monitoring devices and web-cams monitoring the tyre/road contact points. Tests on the sound reflection of foams in a mock-up the acoustic enclosure and the effectiveness of the acoustic shield for reducing bearing noise have been performed in the laboratory. Results show that both designs are able to pass the certification tests.
