Abstract
The existence of cyber-attacks has brought great challenges to the stability of cyber physical power system (CPPS). Moreover, the modal resonance issue as one of the emerging stability issues should be carefully investigated in power systems dominated by power electronics. Hence, this paper proposes a potential modal resonance-oriented cyber-attack (MROCA) against wide-area damping control (WADC) and investigates the impact of the attack on the stability of CPPS. In the design of the attack, Prony analysis is adopted to acquire the oscillation mode in the system. Then the attack signals are designed to force the oscillation mode of the virtual cyber-attack system interact with the oscillation mode of the physical system, resulting in system instability. Also, the impact of the attack on the system is studied by analyzing the sensitivity of eigenvalues with respect to attack parameters. Finally, a case study is carried out in IEEE 39-bus benchmark system to verify the effectiveness of the proposed attack and study the impact of the attack on CPPS.
