Abstract

Continuous wave (cw) mode locking, in a Nd:YVO4 laser using a single crystal GaAs wafer as the saturable absorber and output coupler, was demonstrated. The pump source was a fiber bundle coupled 15-W cw laser diode-array. Pulse width of about 31 ps and a repetition rate of 154 MHz were obtained for mode-locked pulses. Results indicated that by changing the laser power density in the GaAs wafer a pure continuous wave mode locking or a Q-switched mode locking could be achieved.
