Abstract
A cross-layer design scheme for wireless communications is proposed, and the performance evaluated. The scheme combines a truncated automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol at the data link layer and multihop transmission at the physical layer. Closed-form solutions are derived for the average throughput and the average number of transmissions required to send a packet when the channel suffers from Nakagami-m fading. Finally, the improvement, when the cross-layer design is implemented, is shown.
