Abstract

The crack opening displacements of shallow cracks at initiation and maximum load are larger than those of deep cracks. By studying the crack opening displacement in V notch bend specimens it is shown that the most significant parameter in determining the difference in bahaviour between shallow and deep cracks may be the hydrostatic stress.
