Abstract

Random power fluctuations caused by uneven output of renewable energy such as large wind farms and PV plants can be smoothened by Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Considering the constraints of battery operation and requirements of power grids, this paper first formulates an optimization problem to determine the charging-discharging control strategies of BESS. The dynamic programming algorithm is then applied to solve the proposed problem. The numerical results show that the proposed model is effective in smoothening the power output of renewable energy.
