Abstract
Continual interest in the design and optimisation of permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous motors is being fuelled by rapid developments in permanent-magnet material technology, computation methods for electromagnetic analysis and computer facilities. This article draws attention to the application of the finite-element method (FEM) and interactive computer graphics to the design and optimisation of an advanced permanent-magnet synchronous motor. In addition, the system linking a graphics workstation, a minicomputer and a PC for the given task is described.
