Compression and stretch fit garments

Research output: Chapter in book / Conference proceedingChapter in an edited book (as author)Academic researchpeer-review

Abstract

Compression and stretch fit apparel have long been used for the medical treatment of hypertrophic scars and venous diseases, as well as for body shaping and intimate apparel. Compression sportswear has been recently developed to improve athletic performance. Given the extensive applications of compression and stretch fit apparel products, more attention should be given to its functions and effectiveness. The selection of materials and the maintenance of proper pressure levels are critical to achieve the desired outcomes and to avoid negative effects on the wearers. The physiological and psychophysical effects on the human body, which are attributed to the compression garment, may affect the acceptance and compliance of these garments, as well as the outcomes of its use. The balance between different design criteria is important in the development of compression garments.
