Abstract
Illustrated with three photographs showing weft knitted preforms used for composite reinforcement, this article discusses the uses and requirements for the fibrous materials in use. In particular the authors address the use of the best technique, weft knitting, in shaped preforms, and the properties of weft knitted structures. Basically due to the use of loops the preforms exhibit poor mechanical strength. An investigation to determine methods of improving stiffness by looking at the effects of fibre orientation in a number of glass weft-knitted structures has been made. The results will be presented at the Textile Technology Forum, held in conjunction with IFAI Expo 2002 on Oct 23rd at Charlotte, N.C.
