Abstract

A special steel joint configuration was innovated to develop space frame structures using pultruded GFRP profiles. The steel joint configuration was composed of the steel tubular connector and the Octatube joint. Component level experiments were conducted in tension and compression on the structural components with the steel tubular connectors and 108 specimens were examined in total. For tensile specimens, pull-out failure occurred when the bond length was relatively short while tensile fracture of the steel tubular connector occurred when the bond length was sufficiently long. For compact compressive specimens, bending failure of the flattened steel tube occurred at the end. Global buckling failure was observed for the slender compressive members. Unit level experiments examined the design concept and static performance of a pyramid type subassembly.
