Abstract

In this article, two novel dual-stator machines with different biased permanent magnet (PM) configurations are developed and comparatively studied. For the proposed machines, the PMs are only located in the inner stator, but with different configurations, that is, surface-mounted PM (SPM) and interior PM (IPM), respectively. The machine topologies and operating principle are introduced first. Then, the electromagnetic characteristics, including open-circuit performance, torque characteristics, field-weakening capability, loss, and efficiency, are comprehensively analyzed and compared by finite-element method (FEM). The experimental validation is conducted to verify the FEM analyses.
