Comment on 'the state of stress and strain in cold-rolled metal and the localization of strain in shear bands'

Abstract

For decades, shear band formation in f.c.c. metals has been a hot research topic. Just recently, Kusnierz postulated the stress and strain states in macroscopic shear bands. He predicted approx.35° shear bands which are consistent to the experimental observations. In this article, the author comments on the results obtained by Kusnierz. He emphasizes that the assumption of a plane stress state for shear band formation and the methodologies for the prediction of approx.35° shear bands are highly arguable and await further justifications.
