Abstract

Backscatter noise in fibre optic gas sensors is investigated. Interference between signal waves and backscattered waves causes signal fluctuation in the output which limits the performance of the sensing system. Sensor resolutions limited by backscatter noise are calculated for both reflection and transmission type sensors.
