Abstract

The closed‐form weight function for an internal elliptical crack in an infinite body is derived and used to obtain stress intensity factor formulae for nine different loading configurations. For the special case where the elliptical crack has equal semi‐major and semi‐minor axes, i.e. an internal penny‐shaped crack, the weight function and stress intensity factor formulae obtained are identical to those given by Tada, Paris and Irwin [1].
