Abstract
In this chapter, we review China's recent developments and policy reforms in its rail sector and discuss the implications of China's “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI). Overall, China has been embracing a more market-oriented and deregulated rail industry. This would significantly impact the operational efficiency, network structure, and pricing of the rail transportation, thus in turn affecting China's trade by rail with BRI countries. Thus, we specifically review and discuss the development of China-Euro Railway Express, a freight rail service connecting China with BRI countries in Central Asia and Europe. This chapter also reviews in detail China's dramatic high-speed rail (HSR) developments in the past decade. We focus our discussion on several emerging and important issues, namely, HSR express delivery services, private capital participation in HSR construction and operation, and the potential for alleviating or worsening regional economic disparities with HSR connectivity. The potential future research agenda is proposed at last.
