Abstract

The microstructure of TiB2Ti(CN)Ni ceramics has been investigated by means of transmission and analytical electron microscopy. In many cases, TiB2and Ti(CN) grew together with a unique orientation relationship. However, Ti(CN) particles were also found to precipitate in TiB2crystals, and a different orientation relationship between precipitated Ti(CN) particles and TiB2crystals can be detected. The TiB2/Ti(CN) interface was investigated using high-resolution electron microscopy. During hotpress procession, two Ni-rich intergranular phases with Ni31Si12and Ni16Ti6Si7type structures and amorphous phase were formed on grain boundaries.
