Early on, high-tech textiles or materials have been applied to activewear, because activewear plays an important role in optimizing the performance of athletes by maximizing their comfort, minimizing their risk of injury as well as muscle fatigue, reducing friction/drag, and providing freedom of movement. However, a balance between technical and esthetic attributes is also important to satisfy the needs of the end-users. This chapter is a discussion on the use of narrow fabric elastics and accessories for activewear (especially sports bras which use different types of elastics and accessories), and how related developments in fabric technology and garment construction methods primarily rest on three major factors: (1) functionality (i.e., including support, ease of movement, and user-friendliness), (2) esthetics, and (3) smart technology. It is also anticipated that, in the future, the integration of smart technology into activewear will be more prevalent and widely accepted, with huge market potential in the activewear sector, because athletes and exercise enthusiasts are constantly demanding for better performing garments even though their current garments may still be serviceable.
