Abstract

This paper presents a study on the compressive behavior of a composite structural member that consist of steel, concrete and hardwood timber. Samples were created in such a way that a hardwood timber core was placed in the middle of each SHS tube before concrete was filled in the tube. A total of 14 samples, with the timber diameter ranging from 30 mm to 80 mm, were tested under axial compression. The test results were compared with those of hollow steel tubes and fully concrete filled tubes. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of utilizing the fast-growing planation hardwood resources in Australia to produce innovative structural members for the construction industry.
