Abstract

The exploration of bionanocomposites for sustainable development offers a vital insight into innovative biodegradable polymer materials and their integration with nanomaterials. This approach is particularly relevant in tackling the pressing sustainability challenges we face globally. In this introductory chapter, we provide a comprehensive overview of bionanocomposites, emphasizing their distinctive properties and the diverse applications they hold across various sectors such as packaging, construction, and biomedical fields. We delve into the fundamental principles that underpin these composites and discuss their importance in mitigating environmental impact. A key focus is placed on how nanomaterials enhance the mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties of bionanocomposites, thereby broadening their functionality and potential uses. We also categorize different types of bionanocomposites and examine their environmentally friendly production processes, aligning them with sustainable development goals, particularly in terms of waste reduction, resource efficiency, and the advancement of circular economies. Moreover, this chapter addresses the challenges related to the commercialization of bionanocomposites, including regulatory hurdles and market acceptance. This foundational knowledge equips readers with the understanding necessary to explore bionanocomposite technologies in the rest of the chapters.
