Abstract

Recently Sub-commission IIW-XV-E has drafted new Design Recommendations for Hollow Section Joints. These new recommendations are the result of extensive reanalyses discussed at the 12th International Symposium on Tubular Structures in the papers by Zhao et al. (2008), Van der Vegte et al. (2008a, b), Qian et al. (2008) and Wardenier et al. (2008). All changes for CHS joints were carefully presented, however, no background paper summarising the changes made to the RHS joint strength equations was given. To correct this omission this paper deals with the background of the revised design resistance equations of the new IIW design recommendations for T, X, K gap and K overlap joints of Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS).
