Abstract

Background and Purpose:
Telerehabilitation has become a significant alternative to traditional methods under Covid-19. In view of upsurge mental wellness needs in adolescents under pandemic, this study aims at investigating the applicability and immediate effect of Zentangle drawing (a kind of mindful drawing method) in adolescents through telerehabilitation format.

Methods:
Thirty-two participants were recruited from five secondary schools and randomized into an intervention group (n=16) or control group (n=16). A 60-minute session of Zentangle drawing was delivered by an occupational therapist and certified Zentangle teacher to the intervention group through video conferencing platform, while control group received a 60-minute session free drawing session. Heart rate variability of all participants was measured by a free cell phone App (Welltory), and their mental wellness was measured by standardized and self-developed online questionnaires. Instant messaging platform was also applied to communicate with both groups.

Results:
This study found that mental telerehabilitation was easily accessible by adolescents and allowed remote consultation. Research team successfully offered training and accessed participants’ health information remotely. The intervention group was found to have significant improvement on increasing energy level, decreasing stress level and increasing pNN50 level.

Conclusions:
This research is the first study to examine the applicability and effects of Zentangle drawing to promote adolescents’ mental wellness in form of telerehabilitation. Positive effects on reducing stress were shown. This approach may flavor adolescents to receive timely intervention during COVID-19 or those reluctance to receive mental health service physically.
