Abstract
A new approach to calculate and analyze the electromagnetic forces on end windings of large turbine generators is presented. This approach, so-called the quasi-three-dimensional (quasi-3-D) finite-element method (FEM), takes advantages over the conventional 3-D FEM in memory size and time-efficiency. The distributions of the electromagnetic field and forces on end windings of a 100 MW generator are analyzed. Incorporating advanced computer graphics, the analysis can be carried out under visual and interactive environment. The theoretical results are experimentally verified.
