Abstract
We examine a new scheme for improving the linearity of an optical frequency discriminator for frequency modulated (FM) subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) direct detection systems. The scheme uses two integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometers operating in parallel together with a balanced optical receiver. The optimum parameters for achieving an improved linearity have been obtained. The approach was found to be able to achieve a high linearity. This will help to reduce the intermodulation distortion of an optical frequency modulated SCM direct detection system.
