Abstract

On the basis of the double-stress-state variable theory, the consolidated drained shear tests on undisturbed unsaturated loess with suction control were conducted using direct shear apparatus. From the tests results, influence of net vertical pressure and matric suction on the shear strength for undisturbed unsaturated loess was found directly. Thus measuring soil-water characteristic curve was avoided to obtain the shear strength indirectly and the test process for unsaturated soil strength was simplified. Based on these tests results, we have obtained the shear strength characteristics of undisturbed unsaturated loess and relevant relationship curve under different matric suction and proposed a new equation for shear strength expressed as a function of net pressure and matric suction. All coefficients in this equation are determined.
