Abstract
This study aims at employing the life cycle sustainability index developed by Ren (2018) to rank the alternative biofuel production pathways, the interval preference relation-based goal programming models were employed to determine the weights of the criteria for sustainability assessment, and the data of the alternative biofuel production pathways with respect to the evaluation criteria and the weights of the criteria were aggregated into a single index to measure the sustainability of biofuel production pathways. The life cycle aggregated sustainability index of three biofuel production pathways including wheat-, corn-, and cassava-based bioethanol production pathways was determined, and the cassava-based bioethanol production pathway with the sustainability index 0.4292 is the most sustainable, followed by corn- and wheat-based bioethanol production pathways.
