Abstract

We examined dyslexic individuals' performance on reading aloud single characters varying in age-of-acquisition (AoA), consistencies related to the semantic and phonetic radicals, and other variables. The results of initial assessment suggest that FWL showed a reliance on the non-semantic reading route with greatly reduced semantic input, while TWT's reading aloud was mainly mediated by the semantic reading route. Regression analyses were used to analyze their reading performance. It was found that AoA and phonological consistency significantly predicted FWL's performance, and AoA and semantic transparency significantly accounted for TWT's. The findings are consistent with the arbitrary mapping hypothesis.
