Abstract

The scanning acoustic microscope can image ultrasonic attenuation. The plastic zone at a stressed notch has been imaged in transmission with the contrast arising from dislocation damping. Contrast in reflection is also shown to be sensitive to attenuation, enabling attenuation to be detected and imaged.
