Abstract

An airflow window has a great potential for conserving energy and improving indoor air quality. Research has been conducted to develop a novel airflow window for use in residential buildings. The proposed airflow window system consists of a triple glazing unit with dual airflow paths. Forced airflow is used to temper outdoor air with exhausted indoor air, thus reducing heating/cooling demands. The window system works like a crossflow heat exchanger and utilizes solar energy trapped in the window system. Experimentally validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have been used to estimate the benefits of such a window system. The results show that the window system could have a maximum heat recovery efficiency of 80% while continuously providing sufficient outdoor air to indoor spaces.
