Abstract
Multiple airport regions (MARs) are integral components of our aviation system. They play a pivotal role not only in alleviating potential congestion and reducing delays by distributing air traffic across various airports in a region, but also in terms of robustness and resilience of air transportation in case of emergencies or disruptions. While the literature on MARs is rich in general, relatively few studies investigate a global, comprehensive perspective, particularly under consideration of the assortment of MAR component airports. The main objective of this study is to identify MAR similarity as induced by the market concentration / heterogeneity. We investigate the extent to which 218 MARs in the world, covering 556 airports, are similar based on the concept of market concentration of their constituting airports. The results of our concentration-based analysis reveals a new measure of size-independent MAR similarity. We believe that better understanding of inherent similarities and differences across multiple airport regions, enables future studies to investigate the extent of transferability of empirical or policy-related results between different regions, ultimately fostering sustainable growth and increased resilience in the aviation sector.
