Abstract

A 1:10 scale model experiment focusing on the insertion loss of balcony column on a building façade when the line source is not parallel to the façade was carried out in the present study. The "closed" balcony form was chosen. It is found that there is a critical angle made between the façade normal and the line source where the insertion loss of the balcony reaches its maximum value. This angle appears to relate to the floor dimension of the balcony. Sound amplification can be found in the presence of balcony ceiling reflection. This phenomenon is more serious when the elevation of the balcony from the source is small.
