Abstract

This paper describes the design of the rotor blade aeroacoustics test platform and the associate experimental activities at HKUST. The platform was constructed in an anechoic chamber with the dimensions of 3.3 m (L) × 3.1 m (W) × 2.0 m (H). The test rig can assess the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance of small-scaled drone rotors. A two-dimensional traverse system was also implemented for accurately controlling the relative positions of propellers with a high resolution to study the aeroacoustics of multi-rotors. A motor adaptor with a streamlined profile was made to reduce the motor noise and the aerodynamic noise due to unsteady flow. The test rig is covered with sound-absorbing materials to minimize noise reflection and scattering. The far-field noise radiation of propellers is measured at different observers using 20 G.R.A.S 46BE microphones placed on the linear array. Systematic measurements are conducted to investigate the specific time length for reliable data acquisition. The rotor blade testing can be used for investigation of the aeroacoustic characteristics of both single-rotor and dual-rotor.
