Abstract

Environmentally unsustainable and exploitative practices remain persistent problems in the fashion industry. To meet consumers’ growing demand for sustainability, the industry has begun to address the problems by leveraging advanced technologies and innovative solutions, such as blockchain technology. This chapter aims to review the blockchain technology, the key areas of blockchain applications in sustainable fashion and the challenges of blockchain implementation. A review of the academic and practitioner literature was conducted to give a holistic perspective on research innovation and the practical use of blockchain technology for sustainable fashion. This chapter also explains how blockchain technology enables different aspects of sustainable fashion, including proof of sustainable origin, life cycle analysis and emissions trading, circular fashion, and worker wellbeing and social welfare. The benefits and challenges of blockchain adoption for sustainable fashion are identified in this study. Suggestions and recommendations are provided to overcome the challenges and demonstrate the potential of blockchain technology for future implementation. This chapter provides valuable insight and highlights academic and industrial cases in detail for practitioners who intend to leverage blockchain technology for sustainable fashion.
