Abstract

A number of reports of serious ocular complications due to contact lens wear and lack of proper after-care services in Tianjin, China, have aroused the interest of staff members at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. A visit was arranged to Tianjin Eye Hospital to review and report on the local contact lens-fitting situation. About 82% of the contact lenses fitted by the hospital during the review period were for extended wear. The major problems found in the Tianjin contact lens practice were poor general hygiene in the environment, limited knowledge of contact lenses and complications of contact lens wear, poor service and sense of responsibility toward the patient, and lack of patient compliance.
