Abstract

Lightning can be catastrophic to buildings. This paper reviews current practices in lightning protection in Hong Kong’s buildings, and identifies the deficiencies or potential problems against the relevant standards. Fourteen buildings were surveyed from the aspects of design, Installation and maintenance. Discrepancies in down conductors, earth termination, bonding, etc, were found. The problems and difficulties encountered in new and existing buildings are discussed, and recommendations on the overall design, selection and Installation are given.
