Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly used in industry as an energy storage system for applications ranging from portable electronics to high-energy electric vehicle systems. Their reliability and performance in the field can be affected by variations in environmental and loading conditions. Performance characterization testing provides health and performance features that can be used to assess a battery's performance and reliability under a variety of field environments and usage conditions. This paper presents and discusses the performance characterization tests for lithium-ion batteries in portable electronic applications. A case study is also presented where beginning, operational, and end-of-life characterization tests are performed.
