Abstract
A Monte Carlo approach is developed for the layout design of thermal fire detection system. In contrast to the traditional deterministic approach, the present approach yields not only a specific design for a given objective, but also a probabilistic assessment of the effectiveness of the design which can be used as a basis of comparison for different possible designs. The approach also allows a systematic assessment of the uncertainty in the design process and provides a rational basis for possible design improvements.
