A message retransmission mechanism for real-time token ring networks

Abstract

Reliability has not been adequately addressed in existing real-timenetwork communication protocols. We have developed a fault-tolerant, real-time token ring protocol, which can efficiently handle token and message loss due to temporary processing and/or transmission errors, as well as messages loss due to station crashes. In this paper we describe a data-link layer design of the message retransmission mechanism used in the protocol. We describe the design decisions and discuss the results of a simulation study of the proposed mechanism. The objective of the mechanism is to provide a real-time approach to minimizing messages loss in the event of a station crash. To evaluate the performance of the proposed message retransmission mechanism, we have conducted extensive simulation studies. The simulation results give insight into the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in averting messages loss due to station crashes under real-time constraints and various system conditions.
