Abstract
Despite the recent achievement in housing development, there is still a severe shortage of appropriate housing in China. Due to the lack of reliable information and adequate coordination, a number of new problems have emerged in recent years. In order to address these problems, a comprehensive model of the housing industry in China should be developed. Housing problems cannot be treated alone. They are related to many subjects such as town planning, and ergonomics. Many stake-holders with different background and diverse objectives are involved in the housing development process. It is envisaged that a KBS linked with a GIS will be essential for coordinating various interactive elements in the model. The design of such a system is introduced in this paper. Within the system, housing is treated as a large system including many interrelated and relatively independent sub-systems. The benefits and limitations of the proposed system are also discussed.
