Abstract

Nowadays, increasing attention has been drawn to hybrid visualisation tools, such as the hybrid 3D-2D display. The novel visualization tools introduce several challenges in usability evaluation. One of the main challenges is how to design generic tasks to simulate complex tasks in real life. Task design is one of the most critical issues in lab-based experiments, as it will affect the generalization and effectiveness of experimental results. In this study, a novel framework for generating generic tasks for interface usability evaluation is proposed. Specifically, hierarchical task networks will be adopted for generic task generation. A case study is conducted in a hybrid interface of air traffic management. Following the proposed framework, the holding stack in air traffic management is simulated, and two generic tasks are designed accordingly. The feedback from participants confirmed the feasibility of generating generic tasks by using the hierarchical task networks-based approach. Generally, the proposed framework provides an alternative way to objectively evaluate the usability of hybrid visualisation tools.
