A Dynamic Perspective on the Languages and Peoples of China 1

Research output: Chapter in book / Conference proceedingChapter in an edited book (as author)Academic researchpeer-review

Abstract

This essay presents a global overview of the languages and peoples of China from its earliest beginnings, as revealed by archeology and ancient DNA. In contrast to traditional dynastic histories, with their exclusive concern with the ruling elite largely based in the Central Plain, the perspective taken here is one of dynamic interactions and hybridizations among numerous populations throughout the territory of modern China over many millennia. The essay ends with two appendices on the modern situation: one on the peoples and one on the languages.
