Abstract

The world's third-largest economy by 2008, China is likely to become the second greatest market for luxury consumer goods by 2015, with many opportunities in the luxury fashion market. Sanya is a tropical seaside city located on Hainanlsland, the southern tip of China. Tourism is its main industry. Many high-end tourists and holidaymakers from mainland China regularly visit Sanya. With the aim of evaluating whether Sanya might have the potential to become a major centre for luxury fashion retailing in China, the paper first presents a review of the current state of the fashion market in China and the development of a luxury fashion market in China is discussed. Semi-structured interviews with three government and business leaders before and a senior government official during the current worldwide financial crises were used together with PEST analysis to determine the potential for Sanya to become a centre for luxury fashion retailing.
