Abstract

Functional performance specification (FPS) is a structured process in which the client requirements are defined in terms of functions and the performance of the functions is specified. However, during the course of applying FPS at the briefing stage in building projects, it became apparent that defining functions and their performance efficiently and accurately is a huge challenge, due to the limited experience of the workshop participants and lack of appropriate tools to support the process. Case-based reasoning (CBR) is a computer technique that is able to utilize the knowledge and past experience in addressing a specific type of problems (cases), thus to resolve new but similar problems by finding a similar past case and reuse it in the new problem situation. This paper describes the design and development of a prototype CBR system which is designed to address the challenge stated above. In this paper, the structure and the main features of the system will be introduced to illustrate how CBR can support the use of FPS in the briefing practice of building projects.
