Abstract

The in-depth study of the development history of Hong Kong's neon signboards began with an interview with Nam Wah Neonlight & Electrical Manufactory Limited, which donated about 700 neon light sketches to the School of Design of Hong Kong Polytechnic University for visual culture research and education. Through the organization of the over 200 restaurant signboard sketches, Brian Kwok Sze-hang and his team gained an understanding from another angle of Hong Kong's food culture between the 1950s and the 1970s as well as the social, livelihood and economic conditions during different times.
