Abstract

The Chang'E-4 lunar probe successfully made a soft landing on the far side of the Moon, the first such landing in the history. To determine the powered-descent control strategy and operational programs for the lunar surface, a detailed analysis was carried out on the key factors of the surface topography in the Von Kármán cater. It included the elevations, slopes, distribution densities of craters and rocks, as well as the terrain occlusions to sun illumination and communication signals between the probe and the relay satellite. The analysis was based on images collected by the Chang'E-2 satellite and the images and laser range measurements acquired by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. This paper presents the topographic and occlusion analysis results of the Chang'E-4 landing site in the Von Kármán crater. The methods for topographic and occlusion analysis are described in detail. This paper also presents a comparative study of the topographic features in the Chang'E-4 landing area and the Chang'E-3 landing area in Sinus Iridum, on the near side of the Moon. Finally, the precise landing location of Chang'E-4 is presented, and the above-mentioned terrain occlusions are analyzed. The analytical methods described in this paper have demonstrated their effectiveness in real operations and can benefit future missions involving soft landings on celestial bodies.
