Abstract

The paper investigates the linguistic features and function of the simile structures of“xiang”( 像) as shown in the corpora of Bingxin's translations and creative works. Our findings reveal that these structures are used much more frequently in her translations with expanded structural capacity and higher syntactic complexity, which help to convey the author's deep concern for human being's feelings as well as highlight the close connection between secular, spiritual and natural world. This marked usage of the simile structures in the translations not only realizes the ideational, textual and interpersonal functions, but also fulfils the cognitively creative function. Although resembling the shining through effects of the source language text to some extent, the patterns of the simile structures in Bingxin's translations are actually not passive imitations of the original structures by the translator, but driven by the practical need of expressing the message in a multi-functional way.
