Dr. Kai LIU is a research assistant professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Dr. Liu obtained his Ph.D. from PolyU in 2021. He graduated with his Master’s degree from City University of Hong Kong in 2014 and earned his dual Bachelor’s degrees in Wuhan University and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) in 2009. He worked for six years in the construction industry before switching to academia. He worked in CCCC-FHDI from 2009 to 2013, with a focus on site investigation and laboratory tests of soil and rock. Then he worked with WSP from 2014 to 2016, where he mainly focused on design and consultancy. He has been conducting research in PolyU since 2016 and has one-year experience as a postdoctoral fellow after graduation. Dr Liu’s research interests mainly include advanced development of testing apparatus, mechanical behaviour of saturated and unsaturated soils, constitutive modelling of granular soils, and numerical modelling of soils and structures. He was guest editor for special issues "Problematic soils in building construction" and "Application of soil-structure interaction in construction" on Buildings (SCI, JCR Q2). He has been invited as a reviewer for over 20 SCI journals, such as Géotechnique, Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Canadian Geotechnical Journal, etc. He is currently a member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), a member of the Hong Kong Geotechnical Society (HKGES), and an associate member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
Bachelor of Engineering, China University of Geosciences
Master of Science, City University of Hong Kong
Doctor of Philosophy, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Bachelor of Management, Wuhan University
