Prof. Jinxia Liu is an environmental engineer dedicated to solving one of today’s most urgent environmental challenges: persistent chemical pollution in water and soil. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Before joining PolyU, she was a faculty member at McGill University for over a decade, where she also served as Associate Chair (Student Affairs) and Director of the Brace Water Centre. Earlier in her career, she worked at DuPont’s Haskell Global Center for Health & Environmental Science, gaining valuable experience at the intersection of science, industry, and environmental risk.
Professor Liu’s research focuses on “forever chemicals” (PFAS) and other emerging contaminants that persist in the environment and may pose risks to human and ecosystem health. Her work seeks to understand how these chemicals move, transform, and accumulate in water, soil, and infrastructure. She develops advanced laboratory methods to detect hidden contaminants and designs innovative technologies to remove or break them down safely and effectively.
Her research has been supported by major funding agencies in Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States, and she collaborates closely with government agencies, engineering firms, and industry partners to translate scientific discoveries into practical solutions. Through these partnerships, her work helps improve drinking water safety, guide environmental policy, and advance sustainable remediation technologies.
Professor Liu has published extensively in leading environmental science and engineering journals and has contributed to international expert discussions on chemical management and water protection. Her work supports global efforts toward clean water, responsible chemical use, and healthier communities.
