Dr Lai received Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from PolyU. He was then awarded MSc in Occupational Therapy in 2001. Afterwards, he obtained his PhD at PolyU in 2017. With supports from various professors in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences over these years, he is proud to be the “homemade product” of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Most importantly, he has fond feelings for his alma mater.

He has been working in the Hospital Authority (HA) of Hong Kong for more than twenty years. He has ample experience in teaching, administration, clinical service and research which covered field of psychiatric and physical rehabilitation. Most importantly, he has been working actively in clinical research throughout these years. His records of international conference presentations and publications covered various dimensions such as vocational rehabilitation, geri-orthopaedic rehabilitation, wheelchair & seating, amputation rehabilitation, home safety and fall prevention, problem solving style of substance abusers, executive functioning, dementia and caring stress.

In recent years, his research interest geared towards two directions. The first is on the importance of schooling and the development of prosocial behavior in adolescents. He is the advisor of a local NGO on youth development and is a committee member of a district-based parent-teacher federation. Some district-based research projects, namely “moral reasoning of pre-secondary school students” and “helping intention of parent and its influence to their children”, are in-progress. His second research direction is on the implementation of holistic dementia care, which aimed not only to people with dementia but also to their care-givers. Different clinical research projects have been commenced, which includes “reticular activating system functioning in demented patients with behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD)”, “assessment of capacity for everyday decision making (ACED) for people with dementia”, and “executive functioning on of daily living activities in relation to cognitive function in different dementia subtypes”. Moreover, Dr Lai is one of the advisors of the “dementia care link” which is a co-joint community volunteer training project between HA and various district-based NGOs in the community.
