Biography

Dr Han Xu(徐寒) works in Translation and Interpreting Studies, Computational Linguistics, and the broader fields of Applied Linguistics and Digital Humanities, with a particular interest in the interface between language, technology, and professional practice. Her research adopts corpus-based and computational approaches to examine cognitive, linguistic, and pragmatic aspects of translation, interpreting, and related language phenomena, with the aim of generating empirical insights to inform training, assessment, and real-world practice. Her recent work focuses on the integration of generative AI and large language models into translation and interpreting workflows. Her research has been published in leading international journals, such as Across Languages and Cultures, Applied Linguistics, Digital Scholarship in the Humanities, Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, International Journal of Applied Linguistics, Journal of Quantitative Linguistics, Lingua, Meta, Multilingua, Perspectives, Research Methods in Applied Linguistics, Translation & Interpreting, and Translation and Interpreting Studies.

In addition to her academic role, Han is a professional Mandarin–English translator and interpreter certified by NAATI (Australian National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) and CATTI (China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters). She has over ten years of professional experience in the translation and interpreting industry in China and Australia, specialising in conference interpreting across diplomatic, business, and educational settings. Prior to joining The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, she taught translation and interpreting at Monash University and the University of New South Wales. She currently serves as National Treasurer and a member of the National Council of AUSIT (Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators), where she actively promotes the professional development of translators and interpreters. She has also been engaged by leading language service providers in Australia, including All Graduates and 2M, to design and deliver professional training programmes aimed at enhancing industry professionalism and ethical awareness.
