Biography

Dr. Pakdel is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the School of Fashion and Textiles, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His teaching and multidisciplinary research activities encompass a wide range of areas in the textile field, primarily focusing on fiber science, chemistry, and technology. His primary research interests include developing novel functionalities in textiles, fibers, and nonwovens, as well as understanding their fundamental scientific principles. Some of his recent research areas include:

  • Superhydrophobic surfaces, textiles, and coatings
  • Studying the wetting behaviors of textiles and fibrous materials
  • Solar self-cleaning technology
  • Antibacterial treatments
  • UV protective textiles
  • Thermoregulation in textiles and clothing, including passive radiative cooling and heating
  • Fire-retardant textiles and fibers, and related surface treatments
  • Nonwovens
  • Nanotechnology-based treatments for textiles
  • Natural, synthetic, and high-performance fibers
  • Recycling textile waste and fiber-reinforced composites
  • Photocatalysis
  • Synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials
  • Synthesis and characterization of MOFs

Dr. Pakdel completed his PhD at Deakin University in Australia, focusing on nanotechnology-based surface functionalization of textiles to impart novel applications to conventional textiles. In 2017, he received the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Research Fellowship at Deakin University, further exploring the field of functional/smart textiles. Throughout his career, he has worked and conducted research at world-class international universities and research institutes, including the Australian Future Fibres Research and Innovation Centre (AFFRIC), the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM), Carbon Nexus, and Monash University, all in Australia. Dr. Pakdel has led projects funded by industry partners and fundamental scientific research. He is the recipient of several prestigious international scholarships and awards, such as the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and Endeavour International Research Scholarship (IPRS) from the Australian Federal Government, ASP Photocite A Award 2014 from The American Society for Photobiology (USA), Deakin University Research Scholarship, and National Elites Foundation Award.

Dr. Pakdel has been listed among the world’s top 2% of highly cited scientists by Stanford University, highlighting the lasting impact of his research. He has actively published his work in top-tier journals and has authored/co-authored around 60 publications, including original research papers, book chapters, and review papers. He currently serves as an editor for several scientific journals, such as "Advanced Fiber Materials" (Springer), "Journal of Composites Science" (MDPI), and "Frontiers in Materials" (Frontiers).
